CBT Therapy and Primitive Reflex Integration for Wirral Clients

I see a lot of clients from the Wirral. Birkenhead, Wallasey, Heswall, Neston, Bebington, West Kirby. The drive to my clinic in Chester takes between 20 and 35 minutes depending on where you're starting from, and most people find it straightforward. Easier than trying to get into Liverpool, especially during rush hour.

My clinic is at In Motion Clinics, 137 Long Lane, Upton, Chester CH2 1JF. I offer CBT therapy and primitive reflex integration therapy for adults and young people. There's free parking outside the building, so you won't be adding parking stress to your therapy session.

Getting Here from the Wirral

The route depends on which part of the peninsula you're coming from.

From Heswall and Neston: Take the A540 south towards Chester. It's a direct road and the drive is about 20 minutes in normal traffic. This is the quickest route from the southern Wirral and it avoids the motorway entirely.

From Birkenhead and Bebington: Pick up the M53 southbound and come off at Junction 12 for the A56 into Chester. About 25 minutes. Alternatively, take the A41 through Eastham, which is a similar time but avoids the motorway if you prefer.

From Wallasey and New Brighton: Head through the Kingsway Tunnel or take the M53 from Junction 1. Allow 30 to 35 minutes. It's the longest route from the Wirral but still manageable.

From West Kirby and Hoylake: The A540 south through Heswall is your best bet. Around 25 minutes door to door.

Why Wirral Clients Choose Chester

The Wirral sits between Liverpool and Chester, and for mental health services, neither direction is ideal. Liverpool has more therapists, but getting into the city centre from the Wirral is a headache. The tunnels, the traffic, the parking costs. Chester is a calmer, quicker journey for most of the peninsula.

More importantly, what I offer is genuinely hard to find locally. There are counsellors and generic therapists on the Wirral, but very few who work exclusively with CBT as their primary approach. And for primitive reflex integration, you'd struggle to find another provider within an hour's drive. It's that specialist.

I've worked in mental health for 13 years, including clinical roles in the RAF. CBT is what I've done throughout. It's not something I picked up on a weekend course and added to a list of fifteen other modalities. It's my bread and butter.

The Wirral's Mental Health Landscape

NHS mental health provision on the Wirral is under significant pressure. The adult IAPT service has waiting times similar to the rest of Cheshire and Merseyside, typically 8 to 12 weeks before you even get assessed. But it's CAMHS where the picture is really concerning. Wirral CAMHS has had some of the longest waiting times in the northwest, with families regularly waiting over a year for their child to be seen.

For parents on the Wirral whose children are struggling with anxiety, concentration difficulties, coordination problems, or emotional regulation issues, that wait is agonising. You can see your child falling behind at school and there's nothing happening. That's where I come in. I can assess a child for retained primitive reflexes within a week or two and start treatment straight away if it's indicated.

Retained reflexes are surprisingly common in children who've been flagged for ADHD, dyslexia, or anxiety. They're not a replacement diagnosis, but they can be a contributing factor that responds well to targeted intervention. I've seen children make remarkable progress once the reflex piece is addressed.

What I Offer Wirral Clients

CBT therapy for adults and young people dealing with anxiety, depression, OCD, PTSD, phobias, eating disorders, anger problems, and more. I do a proper assessment first. No cookie-cutter approach.

Primitive reflex integration therapy for children, teenagers, and adults. This involves a physical assessment of reflex patterns followed by a programme of specific exercises. It's gentle, it's evidence-informed, and it works alongside other interventions like CBT or occupational therapy.

I also offer online CBT sessions. If the drive to Chester doesn't work for you on a given week, or if you'd rather do all your CBT online, that's fine. The research shows online CBT is just as effective as face to face for most conditions. Primitive reflex work needs to start in person, but follow-up sessions can sometimes be done remotely once you've learned the exercises.

Questions from Wirral clients

How long does it take to get to the clinic from the Wirral?
It depends on where you are. From Heswall or Neston, you're looking at 20 minutes via the A540. From Birkenhead, it's about 25 minutes on the M53 then A55. Wallasey is the furthest point, roughly 30 to 35 minutes. Most Wirral clients tell me it's an easier drive than heading into Liverpool city centre.
Why come to Chester instead of seeing a therapist on the Wirral?
There are therapists on the Wirral, but very few who specialise specifically in CBT, and I'm not aware of any offering primitive reflex integration therapy on the peninsula. If you want a CBT specialist with 13 years of clinical experience, or you need PRI assessment, Chester is your closest option.
How bad are CAMHS waiting times on the Wirral?
Wirral CAMHS waiting times have been some of the longest in the northwest. Families routinely wait 12 to 18 months for an initial assessment. For a child struggling with anxiety, sensory issues, or retained reflexes affecting their schoolwork, that's a long time to wait. I can usually see children within a week or two.
Do you offer online sessions so I don't have to travel?
Yes, for CBT. Online therapy works well for most issues I treat, and it saves you the drive. Primitive reflex integration needs to be done face to face, at least for the assessment and initial sessions, because I need to physically test the reflexes. But plenty of my Wirral clients do CBT online and only come to Chester for PRI.
